Henry Hargreaves
1974-current
Personal Background
Henry grew up in Christchurch, New Zealand and studied from preschool all the way to University, University of Canterbury and Christ’s College. He started his career as a model in the fashion industry in the early 2000's. Photography was always a hobby but he never studied it. Henry wanted to be the guy calling the shots behind the camera, so he went out and bought a camera and began to play around with it. He currently lives in Brooklyn, New York as a full time photographer and owner of two restaurants.
Style
Henry's style was originally still life but he quickly changed to a wide variety of different photography styles. Many of his series are full of bight colors and a cartoonish vibe while others have low light and a moody vibe. Some of his photos are meant to make political stir while others are just funny and make you laugh. Much of his style is his own since he was never trained as a photographer and it makes a unique blend of his thoughts and the influences of pop culture. He does not have just one photography style because every one of his series is vastly different and unique.
Philosophy
Henry's philosophy and major ideas come from political and personal experiences. he's trying to make his viewers think about the political climate and major world issues. He also wants to make people laugh and smile with silly and outrageous series especially with the series "birthdays that will never come". Henry likes a mix of topics and viewpoints in his work like his series "fortunes of a nation" and since he is not originally from the U.S. He wanted to comment of the political leader of the time but in a creative and fun way.
Influences
Henry finds influence in many places, mostly from other art fields but particularly from graphic designer Jessica Walsh and her partner Stephen Sagmeister. “ I love the way they break the rules and experiment and play and do all that kind of stuff” Henry said in an interview. He also finds influence when out and about by experiencing things rather the just sitting at home. when out, he would find inspiration in things that made him smile or laugh and if it stuck with him without him writing i down he would make it his next project. He owns two restaurants and also finds lots of inspiration from food “I wanted to see food interpreted and shown in different ways rather than just ‘you wanted to eat it'.”
